Is Sustainability Just a Flash In the Pan?

Is Sustainability Just a Flash In the Pan?

Despite a recessionary economy, sustainable energy issues took center stage in 2008.

Along with the passage of the mortgage bail-out bill, the Investment Tax Credit – including solar technologies – was extended for eight years. Even though it does not include solar pool heating, it’s still good news for the pool heating side of the industry. The marketing power of tax credits will mean that more consumers than ever are going to have renewable energy on their minds.

In July, Southampton, NY introduced its own Energy Conservation Code, stating that all heated pools must have solar systems sized to maintain water temperature of at least 80 degrees between May and September. It goes on to state that a backup heating source can also be installed, provided it is of the highest efficiency available, and heats the water to no more than 86 degrees.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey Legislature is considering the “Hybrid Swimming Pool Act.” It would require pools to be outfitted with solar heating systems that measure at least 25% of the pool’s surface area, or can provide at least 25% of the needed heating.

So, why should you concern yourself with sustainability? If your customers aren’t already asking about “going green,” they will be. Companies that are nimble, willing to adapt, and willing to innovate in product distribution, or services offered will be the companies that thrive during challenging economic times.
